2003: Phan Thiet, Vietnam
This project intends to assist all those who suffer from leprosy in the province of Binh Thuan in Vietnam.
There are about 1400 lepers in the province, of which 1300 were or are still being treated. They do not all live in one area, but are scattered among many small villages.
The settlement of Phan Thiet is in the south of Vietnam, away from the usual villages along the road. About 300 persons live in this leper village, both the healthy as well as lepers. They live in great poverty. Some live in the simplest of huts, which have straw or corrugated metal roofs. In most cases the roofs leak, and it rains inside.
There is no running water or electricity, light comes from small gas lamps.
Each family usually provides its own needs: on small patches of land beside the huts vegetables are planted with primitive tools.
For cases in which a family has no shelter, we intend to set up small houses, about 5m x 7m each.
The houses are provided with the minimum needed for living in this region, and include a kitchen, a wash room, and a well.
