Introduction and Summary of the Project Activities
Karuna Mission Social Solidarity Taunggyi (KMSS-TGI) has been implementing water supply program in Kone Pyat village, Hokhai Village Tract, Leper Colony, Loilem Township, Southern Shan State, Myanmar since March 1st, 2018. The donor who fully grants the budget to water supply project is St. Lazarus-Fonds Europe. The objective of implementing this project is to improve the living standard of targeted communities living with disability and extremely vulnerable and to get sufficient water all year round for cooking, washing clothes, taking bath not only for rainy season and winter but also for summer. We conducted project orientation with the villagers and formed committee for the water supply project. Then, we conduct a test to ensure water can reach the village or not. After that project staff collected needed materials such as sand, brick, cement, zinc, nail, water pipe, water tap, hard wood, shovel, Mattock etc. for the water supply. And we have constructed concrete storage tank at the water source in the forest which is 4 miles far from the Kone Pyat Village and a big water tank for water contribution point at the village. Opening and blessing ceremony are cerebrated by the parish priest in Hokhai village.
Trip Report
We travelled to the project area once in every month to implement the project activities. Sometimes, we had to travel twice a month if necessary. Therefore, we had to travel 6 times altogether within three months of the project period. The project area is about 64 miles far from Taunggyi and it takes about 3 hours to get there (Hokhai, Leper Colony). Along with the project trip, we met with the priest and sisters who take in charge in Leper Colony, and water committee to discuss about the project implementation process and to get some idea and feedback and to monitor the project activities. Then we plan and prepare things in our meeting and discussion for the project activities.
Narrative (Activities) Report
Main activities for this project are constructing water tank at water source and at the village and connecting water pipe from water source to the village. To connect water pipes from water source to village we had to test it first because if the water can’t reach the village we must change water source. That is why testing is an important thing to do first. After testing, we connected water pipes and constructed a big water tank. Finally, the project is accomplished by opening and Blessing ceremony. In implementing the project activities, we had to conduct project orientation to the village communities before project activities started so that they may contribute their best efforts to the activities and learn something from the project activities. We also conduct monitoring and evaluation on the project implementation activities in order to meet goals and objectives of the project. Each of the project activities are broadly elaborated as follows.
Project Orientation with the community of Hokhai village tract
We went to Hokhai village tract, Kone Pyat on 24th March 2018 for project orientation with the priest who takes in charge of Leper Colony and Kone Pyat’s villagers. And we met with consultant for this project. After the project orientation, seven villagers were selected for water committee. On 24th April 2018, we started the implementation of project activities.

Supporting needed materials for water tank and water pipes
On 23rd April 2018, project staff went to the project area and collected needed materials such as sand, brick, cement, zinc, nail, water pipe, water tap, hard wood, shovel, Mattock etc., for the construction process. We bought cement and water pipe from Taunggyi because we can have enough quantity here and we bought sand from Laikha, it is 26 miles far from Hokhai village. And we bought brick from Loilem, it is 6 miles far from the project area. Moreover, the rest of materials such as Mattock, Shovel, Zinc, Nail, Hard wood, hoe, etc., were bought from Pinglong market, it is 6 miles far from Hokhai village.
Choosing and taking a look at the water source
Project staff went to the forest with Kone Pyat villagers, parish priest and consultant on 16th May 2018 to access and chooses the best possible water source. Then we also checked the path to join water pipe to the village.
Testing water from water source to water distribution point
On 24th April 2018, Kone Pyat’s villagers began to build temporary water bank and tested water from water source to the village. Before testing water, villagers put the soil in the bag to make a temporary pond for testing and collecting water. And we waited till the water was crystal clear. Cement and Sand were carried by motorbike to build temporary water bank to the water source in the forest. That’s why they have to make a small street for driving motorbike. For the water pipe, they were carried by villagers manually. And they had to connect their water pipes many times until they were fitted properly because water could not reach the place we chose as the hill near the village was very high. Water could only reach the entrance of the village. However, there is a possibility that the village will be extended wider in the future when the population grow more. So, after all these processes, the actual construction of concrete storage tank had started on the 16th May.
Construction of a big water tank in the village
A big water tank for water distribution in the village was constructed by the villagers on the 16th May 2018. Villagers were so active and happy to construct the water tank because there is only a well near their village and they can get water from the well only in rainy season and half of the winter. By testing the water from the forest, we found out that there was enough pressure to get water all year round. The tank was divided into two. After the construction, water tank was painted. There were two water taps to collect water from the tank at one side of the water tank. And at the other side of the tank there were one tap and a small pond for washing and bathing.
Opening and Blessing Ceremony of water
On 6th July 2018, all of KMSS-TGI staff went to the village for the opening and blessing ceremony of water supply. Parish Priest Fr. Kyaw Aye and Fr. Pio who is posted in Nam San near the Hokhai village lead the Blessing and Opening ceremony. And Other villagers from No.1, No 2, No 3 also joined the ceremony.
Monitoring on the project activities
We conducted monitoring on the project implementation activities such as construction concrete storage tank at the water source, then connecting water pipe, construction a big water tank for distribution point at the entrance of the village, celebrating opening and blessing ceremony then took the photo records. For the time being water supply is in good situation and there is a water committee for sustainable management of water supply.
Strengths/ Achievement
- Villagers agreed to participate as volunteer for the water supply project from the beginning till the end of the project.
- There was a consultant for the project.
- The villagers participated actively in all stages of the project implementation processes
- There was enough water pressure
- There is a committee to take care of the water supply
Challenges
- The village is situated on the top of a hill that made it hard for water to reach to the center of the village
- Vehicles could not go to the village when it is heavily rained because there is no concrete street to access the village
- Trucks cannot reach to the water source in the forest.
- Water pipes can be disconnected if it is heavily rain.
- There is only few villagers who have the knowledge of bricklaying works
Lessons Learned
Along with the project implementation activities, not only water committee but also other villagers learned how to participate and work together in the development program for their communities.
